Family Vacation Ideas In Washington DC

There are kid friendly vacations locations throughout the United States and beyond. One of our family's favorite family vacation spots is Washington DC. Our family of six has traveled to Washington DC many times .... This article lists our favorite kid friendly Washington DC family vacation attractions...

Over time, and after many family vacations to Washington DC, we have found that the best amount of time spent in Washington DC with children is three days. There is just so much to see and do there, you will absolutely wear yourself out if you try to so it all at once.

The Smithsonian Museums

You and your family can literally spend days in each of the Smithsonian Museums without seeing all that there is to see in each museum. The Smithsonian consists of 17 museums and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and 2 museums in New York City

Of the museums in Washington DC, our favorites are The National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, and the National Zoo.

The National Air and Space Museum has a great number of kid friendly activities throughout the museum. Our favorite was the paper airplane contest - The contest consisted of constructing a paper airplane, and then flying is through a loop held by one of the attendants.

The National Museum of American History is a complete study in the culture and history of America and the American people. We really enjoy walking through all of the exhibits and being reminded of how far the American People have come in the arena of transportation through the years.

The National Museum of Natural History is dedicated to understanding the natural world, and our place in it. The animal exhibits are amazing. The dinosaur exhibit is a family favorite of ours. Be sure to see the Hope Diamond on display there.

The National Zoo is a fantastic place to walk and enjoy your family vacation time together. The apes were personal favorites at the National Zoo.

There is no charge to visit any of the Smithsonian Museums. The Museums open at 10:00 AM daily.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing

This tour is absolutely awesome. The tour was about 45 minutes long, and very informative. The tour guides were very open to answering any questions that the visitors might have. The tour is throughout the actual working Bureau. There is actual currency printing going on during the tour. The kids loved it, and the gift shop at the end of the tour was a real treat.
The Bureau is located on 14th & C Sts. SW in Washington DC. If you are visiting in March - August, you will need a free ticket for the tour. The ticket booth, which is located on 15th Street, is open at 8:00 AM - get there early, the tickets are usually gone by 9:00 AM.

Fords Theater

The Fords Theater is a live, working theater in downtown Washington DC as well as a memorial serving as a living tribute to President Lincoln's love of the performing arts. The Theater is in excellent condition, and the tour allows you to spend as much time as you would like in the theater.
The tour was simple and very interesting, and we were able to take photos inside the theater. The tour guides were very informative and willing to spend as much time with us as we wanted to spend in the theater. This tour is definitely a "must see" on any of your family vacations.

History of Travel & Tourism

2000 years Before Christ, in India and Mesopotamia

Travel for trade was an important feature since the beginning of civilisation. The port at Lothal was an important centre of trade between the Indus valley civilisation and the Sumerian civilisation.

600 BC and thereafter

The earliest form of leisure tourism can be traced as far back as the Babylonian and Egyptian empires. A museum of historic antiquities was open to the public in Babylon. The Egyptians held many religious festivals that attracted the devout and many people who thronged to cities to see famous works of arts and buildings.

In India, as elsewhere, kings travelled for empire building. The Brahmins and the common people travelled for religious purposes. Thousands of Brahmins and the common folk thronged Sarnath and Sravasti to be greeted by the inscrutable smile of the Enlightened One- the Buddha.

500 BC, the Greek civilisation

The Greek tourists travelled to sites of healing gods. The Greeks also enjoyed their religious festivals that increasingly became a pursuit of pleasure, and in particular, sport. Athens had become an important site for travellers visiting the major sights such as the Parthenon. Inns were established in large towns and seaports to provide for travellers' needs. Courtesans were the principal entertainment offered.

This era also saw the birth of travel writing. Herodotus was the worlds' first travel writer. Guidebooks also made their appearance in the fourth century covering destinations such as Athens, Sparta and Troy. Advertisements in the way of signs directing people to inns are also known in this period.

The Roman Empire

With no foreign borders between England and Syria, and with safe seas from piracy due to Roman patrols, the conditions favouring travel had arrived. First class roads coupled with staging inns (precursors of modern motels) promoted the growth of travel. Romans travelled to Sicily, Greece, Rhodes, Troy and Egypt. From 300 AD travel to the Holy Land also became very popular. The Romans introduced their guidebooks (itineraria), listing hotels with symbols to identify quality.

Second homes were built by the rich near Rome, occupied primarily during springtime social season. The most fashionable resorts were found around Bay of Naples. Naples attracted the retired and the intellectuals, Cumae attracted the fashionable while Baiae attracted the down market tourist, becoming noted for its rowdiness, drunkenness and all- night singing.

Travel and Tourism were to never attain a similar status until the modern times.

In the Middle Ages

Travel became difficult and dangerous as people travelled for business or for a sense of obligation and duty.

Adventurers sought fame and fortune through travel. The Europeans tried to discover a sea route to India for trade purposes and in this fashion discovered America and explored parts of Africa. Strolling players and minstrels made their living by performing as they travelled. Missionaries, saints, etc. travelled to spread the sacred word.

Leisure travel in India was introduced by the Mughals. The Mughal kings built luxurious palaces and enchanting gardens at places of natural and scenic beauty (for example Jehangir travelled to Kashmir drawn by its beauty.

Travel for empire building and pilgrimage was a regular feature.

The Grand Tour

From the early seventeenth century, a new form of tourism was developed as a direct outcome of the Renaissance. Under the reign of Elizabeth 1, young men seeking positions at court were encouraged to travel to continent to finish their education. Later, it became customary for education of gentleman to be completed by a 'Grand Tour' accompanied by a tutor and lasting for three or more years. While ostensibly educational, the pleasure seeking men travelled to enjoy life and culture of Paris, Venice or Florence. By the end of eighteenth century, the custom had become institutionalized in the gentry. Gradually pleasure travel displaced educational travel. The advent of Napoleonic wars inhibited travel for around 30 years and led to the decline of the custom of the Grand Tour.

The development of the spas

The spas grew in popularity in the seventeenth century in Britain and a little later in the European Continent as awareness about the therapeutic qualities of mineral water increased. Taking the cure in the spa rapidly acquired the nature of a status symbol. The resorts changed in character as pleasure became the motivation of visits. They became an important centre of social life for the high society.

In the nineteenth century they were gradually replaced by the seaside resort.

The sun, sand and sea resorts

The sea water became associated with health benefits. The earliest visitors therefore drank it and did not bathe in it. By the early eighteenth century, small fishing resorts sprung up in England for visitors who drank and immersed themselves in sea water. With the overcrowding of inland spas, the new sea side resorts grew in popularity. The introduction of steamboat services in 19th century introduced more resorts in the circuit. The seaside resort gradually became a social meeting point

Travel With a Tour Group Or on Your Own?

When asked, "What would you like to do when you retire?" a surprising number of people answer simply, "Travel."

When retirement finally arrives and people give themselves permission to see the world, are they more likely to travel alone or in a group? Which is better?

Some people absolutely love traveling in a group. Even when they go on a cruise, where everything is already pretty much laid out for you--some people prefer to go cruisin' with a group of friends and acquaintances.

Many people like the tour group approach to travel because of its "worry free" features. Tour group travel includes experts who know what they are doing. These experts make all the necessary arrangements. They...

  • Buy tickets
  • Create an itinerary of notable sightseeing places of interest
  • Make reservations for overnight accommodations
  • Offer suitable suggested places to eat
  • Handle emergencies during the tour

Also, traveling with a group provides the feeling of safety in numbers, as one travels to unfamiliar places.

Despite the advantages of traveling with a group, many people enjoy traveling on their own. Some begin their travels with a group and then discover that they would prefer making their own decisions regarding their travel itinerary and arrangements.

Rick Steves is a tour guide who encourages all kinds of travel, but with a passion for those who want to experience the local flavor of one's travel destinations.

In his newsletter, Travel News, Rick Steves reflects: "What distinguishes great travels from typical trips? It's those places and opportunities when travelers can reach beyond their comfort barriers (self- or industry-imposed) and actually connect with the people and cultures they've traveled so far to experience."

For the independent traveler who wants to slow down and "actually connect with the people and cultures they've traveled so far to experience," the home exchange provides a perfect solution. During a home exchange, two households swap homes. The home exchange provides the traveler a residence in someone else's community, a truly unique opportunity for connecting with the local people and culture.

Numerous online home exchange companies have emerged during the past 10 years to help travelers create a home exchange.

The home exchange movement began during the 1950s among European teachers who went in search of an affordable holiday. Now, hundreds of thousands of travelers are embracing the home exchange as they plan their vacations.

As the world gets smaller and smaller, due to modern technology, the urge to travel seems to be getting stronger and stronger. Increasingly, people wonder, "Why wait until retirement to start traveling?" It's a point worth considering. Just remember, the trip of a thousand miles always begins with the first step. Once you have resolved to take that trip, consider your options: do you want to travel with a group or on your own. Either option is a great way to travel. The important thing is to act on your resolve--take that first step.

How You Can Save on Travel Tours and Excursions

There is no denying it. Vacations are no fun when people are inwardly cringing at entree costs or dreading cab fares as meter numbers go up. What was supposed to be a trip of rest and relaxation, a chance to get away, turns into a stressful situation because of limited funds. Still, this is not to say that thrift and pleasure are permanently mutually exclusive.

Shell out currency carefully on stuff that are less important so there is plenty left over for items you genuinely treasure - like souvenirs, side excursions and tours. In this way, you are sure to avoid complaining about menu choices and steep cab fares, since you would know cheaper ways of eating and getting around town.

Wallet-Friendly Vacation Travel Tips

Vacationers with tight budgets always welcome money-saving travel tips. Below are a few of the most practical ones travelers such as you could benefit from.

o Do your homework. Peak season travels, sticking with a single site someone told you about, locking in on the first deal encountered - these are all ways to burn some serious dough. It would be wiser to make time to compare prices, consider where it is okay to cut corners on hotel rooms and flights, and read several hotel reviews.

o Buffet busters. For family group travels, pick hotels offering free morning buffets. This eliminates having to go out to nearby restaurants, so you save on time as well as gas.

o Be souvenir-picky. Purchase gifts that have multiple uses. A present that offers more ways to utilize it are best.

o Do rentals. Taxis often cost a bundle on vacation, which make rental cars a more attractive way to go. Rather than taking a cab back to the hotel, try riding a bus. This way you get some sightseeing done while saving plenty of cash. The Internet has bus maps you can search prior to leaving, but some hotels go the extra mile and do the legwork for you.

o It is all-in. Consider all-inclusive resort places to keep expenses under control, but avoid limiting yourself. The packages usually include water sports, various shows and activities, snacks and meals.

o Drive through. When driving toward destinations requiring overnight stays somewhere, choose the cutoff point destination. Book the place a day (or 24 hours) before leaving and then pay. With this setup, you are forced to drive there instead of stopping at random hotels on the highway.

o Do it yourself. Get the groundwork done yourself by researching online, then contacting a travel agent, giving them your specifications and seeing what they can offer in terms of price range and perks.

o Strength in numbers. Try travel tour groups that provide excellent deals to practically everywhere. Some have itineraries that are organized yet also flexible, where participants can opt in or out of the excursions.

o Online coupons galore. Major stores and products online like Viator and CityDiscovery offer coupons. These coupons are just as handy as their offline counterparts. Ensure a steady flow of these discount items by checking with websites specializing in locating, sorting and providing Net discount coupons.

In the end, the best way to save when traveling is to behave in the same way you would when in the town you live in. That is, someone who cannot afford dining out every night of the month will likely make their own food at home instead. Do the same thing on vacation. Can't afford cab rides? Rent a car or take the bus. Just as you check museum admission prices before going, research everything first so it is easier to budget for trips. A bit of planning can translate into huge savings, and ultimately, more spending money.

History Travel - See Historic Jamestowne The Original Site

The founding of England's first permanent settlement in North America began as a story of intense struggle and the constant threat of failure. The "promised land" settled in 1607 proved to be swampy much of the year and a breeding ground for disease. Highly stressed, the colonists fought among themselves and soon managed to anger local Indians who had tried to befriend them. What's more, the worst drought in 770 years destroyed their crops. Although hundreds came from across the Atlantic, only 60 had survived here by the spring of 1610. Such was the "birthplace of America."

How could Jamestown have survived? Remarkably, it did; ultimately, it even prospered. For over 90 years, Jamestown served as the English colonial capital. But in 1698, its statehouse burned. After that, the capital was moved to nearby Middle Plantation, soon to be known as Williamsburg.

This is a fascinating place to visit. Significant parts of the original fort -- including wells, interior buildings, a warehouse and several pits -- have been identified. Archaeologists are still working at the site, and hundreds of the more than 2 million artifacts discovered to date are displayed at the new Visitor Center and at the Archaearium exhibition center. Near the park entrance are the remains of a 1608 furnace used in a failed attempt to make glass. Close by is Jamestown Glasshouse, where master craftsmen today produce glass objects using seventeenth-century techniques. At the fort site itself, the church's brick tower is still standing, now part of the Jamestown Memorial Church. Portions of the palisade have been re-constructed where the original posts stood 400 years ago. And, of course, talks by costumed interpreters and park rangers heighten the experience.

Miami Tourism: Plain Sailing or Troubled Water Since the BP Oil Spill?

Miami beach is one of the most recognisable locations in the world, after the BP Oil Spill will the beach be a white heaven or a black hell? Here's a quick timeline of the oil spill to put some of it into perspective:

20th April: The Oil Rig, Deep Water Horizon reports an explosion and fire, eleven people are missing and 17 injured

22nd April: The Deep water Horizon sinks in 5,000ft of water. There are reports of a five mile ling oil slick

25th April: The underwater well is leaking at 1,000 barrels of oil a day.

28th April: The Coastguard announces that the flow of oil is at 5,000 barrels per day, five times larger than first estimated. Controlled burns begin.

29th April: President Obama gives his first public speech about the spill, pledging that he will spare no resource to stop the spill.

1st May: The coastguard announce that the spill will affect the coast.

13th May: A researcher from Purdue University puts the amount of oil leaking at 70,000 barrels per day.

15th June: President Obama says that the Oil Spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced

19th September: BP finally stops the ruptured well from leaking.

It's been a tragic summer for the Gulf of Mexico, with the President saying that the Oil Spill is the worst environmental disaster in U.S history.

As you can see from the timeline above, the Oil Spill did hit the coast of the US, and our TV screens were filled with reports of tar and oil balls washing up onto the shores. The big question is whether this disaster is going to affect tourism? We know that it affected the fishing trade as the fishing boats were banned from the spill sight. It has also had some lasting environmental damage, with a species of seahorse almost going extinct as a result.

After the spill had stopped the reports of the little black tar balls disappeared from our TV's but the question still remains that whether this disaster will affect tourism to one of America's tourism hotspots.

We have already seen political representative's promoting Florida's and Alabama's beaches. Barrack Obama was photographed swimming with his daughter, and more recently Governor Charlie Crist has been photographed promoting Miami's South Beach.

Top Travel Trends in 2010

The holidays next year will be to a great extent affected by the economic recession most countries suffered this year. That however does not mean that people will not go on holiday, but that instead they will be more careful with how and on what they spend their money. Holiday makers will spend more time searching for great deals, such as exploring new travel destinations to find the best bargains and joining Online Travel Agencies (OTA) to gain good discounts. Below are some of the predicted top travel trends for the year 2010.

1 - Looking for budget options

Economical holidays will the key deciding factor this year, with holiday makers searching out the best budget details and discounts. Make sure when you plan your holiday this year, not to just go for what looks like the best rate, but hunt deeper for complementary give-aways, such as a free night's stay on a multiple night stay, gift cards, spa credits, coupons and free dining etc.

2 - Eco Travel

Humans are slowly but steadily becoming more aware of their impact on nature. Think 'green' is the trend these days, with its effects being felt even by the travel industry. Most travelers look for eco friendly holiday options, holidays that cause minimum damage to nature. Eco travel was born out of this need and is a continuing trend for 2010.

3- Mixing business with pleasure

The world is always on the go, with most travelers finding it more economical and viable to mix business with pleasure. Nowadays business travelers look for accommodation options that cater to all their business needs while providing leisure activities as well, so they can enjoy the best of both worlds.

4 - Latin adventure

Latin America is finding itself growing more and more popular with travelers as a luxury travel destination.

5 - Train Travel

Rail travel in Europe has grown popular, as this is an economical way of traveling while enjoying the wonderful scenery on the way. This has become even more popular with the new high speed rail links into Spain and Italy.

6- Going Mobile

With the growth of mobile applications and capabilities, it is now even easier to plan your travels, such as tracking flight information and planning itineraries. Mobile phones now play a very important role for travelers in helping them with their travel planning. They are used to receive information from travel agents etc and are fast proving to be invaluable to travelers.

7 - One platform for travel plansa

With the busy schedules most of us have, it is easier to have one central platform from which to plan your travel details. This way you can keep track of everything happening in the travel industry, be up to date on the latest happenings and not just make one off purchases. The Internet offers strong travel centric sites where such central services are offered, so that people can plan every aspect of their travels, from creating the trip, to searching for accommodation, getting advice about the intended trip, finding the best deals down to updating profiles so as to keep friends and family informed.

8 - Adventure Travel

The year 2010 will find people looking for holidays with more action. Most now look beyond the standard and look for adventure such as jumping out helicopters, skiing, safaris, bungee jumping as well as more personalized holidays with private tours of museums and art galleries. For the more adventurous a growing trend is to take a high-speed car tour around major cities!

9 - Seeking out new hotspots

As with everything in this world trends change. As travelers expand their travel horizons, China, India and the Gulf States find themselves growing into the latest hotspots. This trend will grow more in 2010 as travel to the ever popular European destinations at the moment for most, is not economical.
